What to Expect During Solar Panel Installation in Cardiff

One of the most common questions we get from Cardiff homeowners is: “What actually happens on installation day?” It's a great question — and knowing what to expect makes the whole process much less daunting. Here's our complete, honest guide to the solar panel installation process in Cardiff.

The Complete Solar Installation Timeline

1

Free Survey (Day 1)

1–2 hours at your home

One of our Cardiff-based engineers visits your property to assess your roof condition, orientation, shading, structural integrity and electrical setup. We take measurements, check your consumer unit and discuss your energy usage. You'll receive a detailed quote within 24–48 hours.

Tip: Have a recent electricity bill to hand — it helps us size your system accurately.
2

System Design & Quote (Days 2–5)

No visit required

Our design team creates a bespoke solar system layout using specialist software, calculating your projected generation, savings and payback period. We'll send you a detailed proposal with everything itemised — panels, inverter, mounting, wiring, DNO application and MCS certification.

Tip: Ask us to model different system sizes so you can compare the payback periods.
3

DNO Application (Weeks 1–3)

We handle everything

Before installation, we submit a G98 or G99 application to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) — typically Western Power Distribution for Cardiff. This notifies the grid of your new solar system. Most Cardiff applications are approved within 1–3 weeks.

Tip: You don't need to do anything — we manage all the paperwork.
4

Scaffolding Erection (Day Before)

Half a day

Our scaffolding team erects a safe working platform around your Cardiff home the day before installation. We use minimal footprint scaffolding to reduce disruption to your garden and neighbours. Scaffolding typically stays up for 2–3 days.

Tip: Let your neighbours know in advance — it's good practice and they'll appreciate the heads-up.
5

Installation Day

1–2 days

This is the big day! Our NAPIT-approved electricians arrive at 8am and work through the day. The roof team fits the mounting rails and panels while the electrical team installs the inverter, runs cables and connects to your consumer unit. Most Cardiff homes are completed in a single day.

Tip: You don't need to be home all day, but someone should be available for the electrical connection.
6

Commissioning & Handover

1–2 hours

Once installation is complete, we commission the system, test all connections and set up your monitoring app. We walk you through how everything works, explain your SEG options and hand over all documentation including your MCS certificate.

Tip: Download the monitoring app before we leave — it's satisfying to watch your first kWh being generated!

Will Installation Disrupt My Daily Life?

Minimal disruption is our goal. Here's what to expect on installation day:

Your electricity will be off for approximately 1–2 hours while we connect the inverter to your consumer unit.
The roof work is noisy but typically completed by early afternoon.
We clean up all waste and debris before we leave — your home will be as tidy as we found it.
You can use your home normally throughout the day — just plan around the brief power outage.
Most Cardiff homeowners tell us the installation was much less disruptive than they expected.
